Dates Fig Energy Bites

Dates fig energy bites

Dates Fig Energy Bite (or Dates laddu) is a super snack for both adults and kids. It can also be a guilt-free festive treat for those with a sweet tooth! Being nutrient-dense and having no sugar, it can be a great post-workout snack.

This recipe is so versatile I am sure you can play around with the ingredients and come up with variations. Maybe use raisins or other dry fruits, chocolate chips, sesame, dessicated coconut, etc. For the energy bites pictured in this post, I used organic dates from the palm in my parentsโ€™ garden in Kuwait, along with dry figs and nuts.

Since I started experimenting in kitchen, I go crazy whenever I see the huge collection of nuts and dry fruits of all sorts in shops and markets. Arab countries are the best if you want to shop for nuts and dry fruits, and of course dates (which my parents so painstakingly wash and pit after the harvest, making them perfect to pack for travel)!

Do try this recipe and snack away!

Total Time 25 minutes
Course Dessert, Snack

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup Pitted Dates
  • 1/2 cup Chopped Dry Figs
  • 1/2 cup Nuts (I used a mix of Cashew nuts, Almonds, Walnuts)
  • 1/2 cup Rolled Oats
  • 1/2 cup Hot milk / water
  • Extra whole nuts – a handful (optional)

Instructions

  • Soak the pitted dates and chopped dry figs in hot milk or water for 15-20 minutes.
  • In a frying pan, dry roast the nuts and oats for 2 minutes. Keep aside to cool down.
  • Grind the nuts and oats in a food processor or dry grinder to a powder form.
  • Remove the dates and fig from the milk/water and puree in the food processor. (The fruits absorb some or all of the milk/water.)
  • In a large bowl, mix the pureed fruits and the powdered nuts and oats. Add whole nuts, if you wish.
  • Mould the mixture into small balls using your hand.
  • Refrigerate and snack away!

Notes

  • If you have young toddlers at home, avoid adding whole nuts as they can be a choking hazard.
  • You can replace cashew nuts, almonds and walnuts with other nuts like peanut, hazelnut, pistachio, etc.
  • Wetting your hands with water while moulding the mixture into balls will be easier as the mixture may be very sticky.
  • You can coat the energy bites / laddus with dessicated coconut, sesame seeds, crushed pistachios, etc.
